Here’s something I don’t understand - why are there no “walk/don’t walk” lights on Park Avenue in midtown?
In order to know when it’s okay to walk you have to look at the traffic lights meant for vehicles, which are positioned in the best place for people in cars to see them, not for people standing on the sidewalks. Plus if it’s a one way street and you’re walking against the traffic, you’ve got nothing to go on.
Also, how are you supposed to know when you’ve only got a few seconds left to get the feck out of the way? I need that blinking hand in front of my face telling me to hurry up; it’s not convenient for me to keep looking up and to the right or left in the middle of a crowded street to check if the light’s yellow (I’d rather keep my head positioned where I can see the cars in my peripheral vision, thank you) and besides, by the time it’s yellow, it’s time to run.
EDIT: Take a look at Chris‘ great response.
